Quick Facts about the Economic Stimulus Act

  • 130 million people will receive stimulus payments totaling $106 billion.

  • The Associated Press estimates that 4% of this money will be given to charity.

  • This amounts to over $4 billion being donated to charity, from the economic stimulus alone.

  • In 2006, Americans gave $295 billion to charity. The Economic Stimulus Act has the potential to push this number up to almost $300 billion.

What you can expect with your stimulus payment

In February 2008, Congress and President Bush enacted the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008. This act will release $106 billion into the economy.

Rebate amounts will vary per person and per family. Rebates will go up to $600 per individual, or $1,200 per married couple, with an additional $300 per child.

While the rebate is phased out for individuals earning over $75,000 per year and married couples earning over $150,000, over 95% of taxpayers will still receive a stimulus payment.

The IRS is distributing rebates between May 2 and July 11. Your exact date of payment depends on the final two numbers of your social security number. The lower the numbers, the sooner you will receive your payment. You must have filed a tax return by April 15 to receive a rebate during this time period.
